The firm was fined by the Financial Services Authority for persistent misselling of payment protection insurance on its credit cards. For nearly two years Egg pushed thousands of its customers into buying a PPI policy despite the fact that it was useless in many cases. Egged into purchase Customers were sold useless insurance even on occasions when they did not specifically agree to it On several occasions customers who replied only Hmm when asked whether or not they wanted to take out the insurance were signed up to a policy despite not actually saying they wanted it. Typically it cost for the period over which they had the card. The FSA criticised Egg for serious failings in its sales. The insurance is supposed to pay out if policyholders become ill or lose their job but it is infamous for failing to do so and for being mis sold. It is the latest scandal involving PPI which is currently the subject of a major investigation by the Competition Commission. Other tactics include overemphasising the positive features of the policy or charging them for the policy even if they had not said yes. Margaret Cole director of enforcement at the FSA said Egg used inappropriate sales techniques to try to persuade customers to buy payment protection insurance on their credit card even when they asserted they did not want the cover. If a customer does not want PPI they should not be pressured into taking it. Yesterday Egg owned by the American investment bank Citigroup was forced into issuing a public apology to its customers. It would have faced a bigger fine of . million if it had not co operated with the City watchdog and agreed to settle early in the investigation. It is the second major public embarrassment involving Egg credit cards this year. In February it became the first credit card company to write to some of its customers to order them to stop using their cards. The latest mistake will leave Egg with a compensation bill of around pound million to pay all the affected customers. Letters will be sent to them this week to establish whether or not they are eligible for compensation. Citigroup said only per cent of the policies were sold under its ownership. It bought the company from Prudential in May . An Egg spokesman said We are taking the matter very seriously and would like to apologise to any customers who have been affected. In total the City watchdog has taken action against firms over the poor selling of PPI including Alliance Leicester which paid a record million fine. Sales of PPI have been a money spinner for banks and insurance companies. There are currently million policies generating an annual premium income of around . billion.
